Bold and Black for Kitchen Chic

Creating a predominantly black kitchen was a brave move that proved highly successful. Jag Kitchens have transformed a very sad old mint-green coloured kitchen into a sleek and modern space using lots of bold glossy black.

“The old kitchen had a green formica benchtop, the cupboard doors weren’t working properly and it did not reflect the rest of the very well-presented St Johns home,” explains Jag Kitchens designer, Megan Dyer.

She found working with client, Craig Cooper, was a straightforward process. And both designer and client are thrilled with the stylish result.

“My client came in with a very clear idea of what he wanted. Because he had good ideas, it made my job easier. Once we had all the elements in place, the key was to make sure that everything was lined up symmetrically. The result was a very modern vibe – a nice, streamlined and contemporary kitchen.”

In keeping with the ‘black theme,’ Craig chose a Samsung fridge with a black fascia and also a black rangehood. The cabinetry completed the black look – Jag’s acrylic gloss in “Carbon” was used. This is highly reflective and almost brings the outside into the room.

The splashback was done in glass, and the bench in a durable engineered stone. Both of these were in white providing a sharp contrast to the cabinetry and bringing light into the space.

The client selected his flooring in laminated wood in a dark brown hue, which added warmth to the kitchen and yet another contrast.

“The best thing about the new kitchen is that it’s now far more functional and it’s also very visually appealing. About 90% of all the new kitchens we’d looked at had been white, but we had seen a few black kitchens in the months before we started our project and thought they looked very sharp,” Craig explains. “That was the way we wanted to go.”

He laughs that the former U-shaped kitchen in his house had been built in 1995 and was “almost out of date before it was installed.”

And he is very delighted with the new slick style. “I’m a mechanical engineer and so with a construction background I had a good idea of what I wanted. I worked with Megan and she was able to enhance my original concept. The lighting that we added gives it a real wow factor as well.”

Craig says he enjoyed the process of planning and having the new kitchen installed. “They run a very good operation at Jag Kitchens. There were always other associates willing to help if my consultant was not available. They were all competent, friendly, willing to help and wanted us to have a great kitchen”.
